Parental leave as an adoption benefit

Employers extend many adoption benefits to workers, and the most common benefit is parental leave. This leave comes in two types - paid or unpaid. Those working for big companies need not fret. Federal law mandates some companies extend time off to their employees!

If an adoptive parent works in a company employing 50 or more people, federal law mandates the amount of possible unpaid leave. Employers must offer both the mother and/or father up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for the adoption of a child. Adoptive parents can request their employers offer more than this 12-week period.

Federal laws don't stop there. The U.S. Government specifies employees can return to their previous job or an equivalent one. Additionally, employers must also continue an employee's health benefits during parental leave.

But adoptive parents employed in workplaces with less than 50 employees need not fret. Most companies offer unpaid leave. Though non-paid leave is most common, more and more employers offer paid leave to their employees.

OK, so where does a prospective adopter get this information? One will must speak with their employer's human resources or equivalent. They'll have all the details.

YeahBaby.com thoughts:
Would you like to receive a paycheck during your unpaid leave? Ask your company if flex time is available for your leave. Extra hours could be worked prior to your adoption period, The hours would then be paid during your leave!
