If you have ever considered adopting, you're not alone. According to the Dave Thomas Foundation For Adoption, about 4 in 10 Americans have considered adopting. That's almost half of all American adults. Yet, there remains a huge number of American children waiting in foster care. 134,000, to be exact.
So why is there this big gap? It depends. There seems to be a lack of knowledge within the general public about adoption and what's involved. Prospective adopting families have specific concerns having to do with adoption policies, financing and other issues. Some families are even scared off by the seemingly long adoption process.
Whatever the reason, adoption agencies and foundations are catching on. They are spreading the word and attempting to educate interested families about the adoption process.
If you're one of the many people who have considered adoption but haven't for your own reason, maybe it's time to consider it again. There are thousands of children waiting hopefully for loving families. Maybe there's one waiting for you.
